16 - Who's Life Is It Anyways?
[Dan's POV.]
I was talking to Holly in the hallway, making my way to the kitchen, when the door swung open.
“Hey there!” Maya smiled, stepping in.
I was about to reply when I noticed someone behind her. I frowned. “Phil?”
“Heya,” Phil answered nervously.
I frowned, looking from him to her and back. Finally, I said, “Maya, can I talk to you in the kitchen?”
She sighed. “Dan, please.”
“Hear me out?”
She looked at Phil, and he shrugged. “Go ahead, I'll say hi to Lizzy...”
She sighed again, and turned back to face me. “Alright.”
I pushed the door open and stepped inside, putting Holly down on the counter. She gurgled, blissfully unaware of the whole situation.
“What is it?” Maya groaned.
“You're back with Phil? Again?”
“Dan, seriously. I don't need this talk. I do what I want, alright? I'm a big girl. And plus, wasn't it just today that you were telling me to apologize?”
“Yes, but...”
“What, Dan?” she sighed.
“I don't want to see you like that again...”
She looked away, rubbing the back of her neck nervously. “I... Look, it was a bit... We were both on edge. Between college applications and Lizzy being at the hospital... Things are getting better now on that front. I think it's worth a try.”
I nodded, smiling slightly. “Okay. If you think so, I trust your decision. Just... Be careful. None of us want a repeat of what happened.”
“Thanks Dan,” she smiled, hugging me as Holly gurgled again. Maya chuckled, patted her on the head, then walked out of the kitchen. I picked Holly up and sighed as I walked back into the living room, where Lizzy was sitting.
“That was a bad move on her part,” was the first thing she said when she saw me enter.
“Why?” I frowned, sitting down and putting Holly on the floor.
“Because,” Lizzy sighed. “The same thing's gonna happen to her again. They're gonna get into a petty argument, they'll say things they won't mean, and...”
“No, I don't know, I don't think so. It all happened during a really tough time, and well, things are getting better now, right?”
Lizzy shrugged, looking away. “I don't know. I still think it's a dumb move.”
I shrugged as well. “It's her life.”
“Doesn't change the fact that it's a stupid-ass move.”
“Okay, I get it.”
“Why are you getting mad at me?”
“I'm not! I just don't want to argue with you about something that doesn't concern us.”
She sighed, rolling her eyes and turning back to the tv. I groaned, leaving the room. What got her knickers in a twist?
